Nick Portsmouth (Voluntary Driver)

I first began driving for the club in the 1980s after, I vaguely remember, answering a request for drivers in the Harwell Site Newsletter. It seemed a very worthwhile thing to do.

When I first started, I used to drive from Abingdon, pick up a group of members in Faringdon, take them to the club and then go to brass band practise in Kidlington. This continued for quite a time but then the driving started to take itís toll and I had to regrettably stop.

A few years passed and as a result of my circumstances changing, I decided that Iíd like to start driving for the club again which Iíve been doing for 4 or 5 years now. I now live in Grove and take a group of members from Wantage to the Club and back again.

Iíve enjoyed driving for all the members on my route but especially for Dick Prior. I have to be honest and say that when I first started driving for him, I found him difficult to understand but now have no problem. Heís very courteous and loves a chat and always shakes my hand to thank me for driving him, which I think is a lovely touch.

I think that the Club is excellent with a great range of activities for the members. I also think itís fantastic that itís been run almost continually by the same committee, which shows a great deal of dedication to the members. Drivers are often told that the club couldnít run without them but I think thatís also true of the club committee members and all the other fantastic helpers.

I try and attend the carol service each year and enjoyed the tour of the Didcot Power Station, but havenít been to any other events.
